A complete wooden washboard and laundry paddle set, from the 1920s. The washboard has it's raised "kneeling" box still attached and the legs are still strong and sturdy, so the washboard sits at it's original angle and can still be used. Washerwomen at the riverside were common in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and this French version of a washboard, has a three-sided box or "caisse" that went with it. The woman knelt in the box, so her skirts stayed dry. For more comfort, she could pad it with straw to cushion her knees.
In amazing condition, it has been extensively treated for woodworm and repaired where the wood had started to disintegrate. It has everything essential for authenticity in styling; rustic patina and "wear" consistent with it's age and use. A wonderful, interesting and usual item to display in a laundry room or bathroom/washroom setting. Displayed on wall the box forms the perfect shelf for a trailing plant, which could extend down the board.
It is huge, it stands 34cms/ 1ft 1" tall and is 82cms/ 2ft 8" full length. The angled washboard section is 64cms/2ft 1" long x 27cms/ 10½" wide. The box section is 44cms/ 1ft 5" at it's widest x 20cms/ 8" deep x 18cms/ 7" tall. It weighs around 5kgs/ 11lbs. The paddle beater measures 41cms/ 16" long.
