This large, French, clay olive oil/vinegar jar is a wonderful decorative item for any French country kitchen or provincial farmhouse interior.
'Aged to perfection' the patina of its glaze oozes rustic charm. Used for the storage and transportation of olive and walnut oils and vinegars, keeping them cool, this smaller version of the larger jars was designed for daily use, it being the perfect size for kitchen shelf / larder storage. Oil or vinegar would be decanted into this jar from larger 'urns' in the house cellar.
It has an elegant shape, narrow neck and tapered body. Hand thrown jars, such as this one, are increasingly rare to source and are becoming collectors pieces.

It is weighs 2kgs/ 4.4 lbs. It stands 27cms / 10½" tall (with lid), is 12cms/ 4¾" diameter (at the base) 22cms/ 8½" wide, to the handles. The top opening is 7cms/ 32¾", the cork/tap hole is 3cms/ 1".
It is marked 'Fait Main' (handmade) on the underside of the pot and is stamped 3L, its liquid capacity, alongside its Normandy pottery makers mark 'LA POTERIE DES MOTTES.'
In excellent condition, it has no chips or cracks. Perfectly watertight. It still carries the faint smell of vinegar! Utterly charming, it is authentic and original. It comes with its original cork tap.
