A rare and collectible, antique, stoneware flagon by George Skey of Tamworth in England. This salt glazed flagon was used during World War One, to issue British soldiers their rum rations. The "S.R.D." mark stands for "Service Rum Distribution". Among the soldiers there were many other meanings interpreted by the "S.R.D" letters, such as "Seldom Reaches Destination", "Soon Runs Dry" or "Service Rum Dilated"! This flagon is huge, standing 33cms tall/ 13" x 17cms/ 6¾" diameter. It weighs a heavy 3.5kgs/ 7.7 lbs!
Handmade around 100 years ago it has a naturally "rough" surface texture and glazing imperfections that give it character and personality. It is in amazing condition, still perfectly watertight, with no chips or cracks. It has a desirable amount of "crackle" to the glaze. Cleverly designed without a handle, which could be vulnerable to damage, it was "made to stand the test of time". A wonderful "talking point", it would look fabulous in any country farmhouse kitchen setting.
The stamp on the bottom and side reads: "SKEY, TAMWORTH." George Skey´s Wilnecote Pottery Works in Tamworth was founded in 1860 by George Skey & Co and became notable for its array of stoneware products. The company was taken over in 1936 by Doulton.
